Promoted Pins from Pinterest

Pinterest is getting serious about monetizing their model.

In September, we told you about our plans to experiment with Promoted Pins on Pinterest. Now, we’re working with a small group of brands in the U.S. to roll out a paid test in our search and category feeds.

These brands will help us test Promoted Pins to make sure they’re tasteful, transparent, relevant and improved based on your feedback— so that Pinterest continues to be a great experience for everyone.

Pinterest kept it’s focus on developing the product, growing the user base and ensuring sufficient engagement levels are reached.

The way Pinterest is going about this, reminds me how Twitter enrolled their advertisement model. If you also recall Twitter was the last in the industry to reach to the conclusion of rolling out their advertisement solutions. 18 months following that they went public.

Following a similar model to Twitter, allowed Pinterest to be embedded into the industry as the prolific referrer of traffic they are today. Brands, publishing houses, cat bloggers, fashionistas, foodies… have the image sharing platform as a reliable source of traffic/income. Now, Pinterest can start to benefit from this relationship and start to fund the sacrifice it required in the beginning.

As a Twitter user, I have witnessed this simple communications tool used to help unlock long-locked doors, to promote cultural awareness and sensitivity, to tear down walls of oppression, to alter the way businesses attend and respond to customers, to connect people in ways never before thought possible, and to democratize the creation and flow of information around the world. I have met and interacted with so many incredible people because of Twitter.

Twitter is buying Bluefin Labs

Twitter is acquiring the social TV analytics outlet Bluefin labs.

With this acquisition, Twitter is taking another step to become an all capable media solution that serves text, images, videos in a brand R&D friendly environment. Twitter stores and analyzes every bit of user interaction (@messages, favorites, links clicked), this allows companies to actually measure return on investment made with the platform.

Your ‘social’ audience in terms of eggs

Eggs are very healthy and nutritious and we all should consider them to be a part of a healthy diet. But considering eggs when you aim to engage an audience for your brand’s communications, not a sound decision.

Twitter, created it’s own way of expressing ‘influence’, a very fundamental cog in our social structure, and tied it to few numbers shown on users profile. This created delusion amongst some users that success within digital media, more specifically in social media, is measured by numbers and lead them to cheat the system by buying twitter followers.

Twitter has millions of fake and computer generated user accounts, which are controlled by ‘dealers’ who sell their follow or retweeting capabilities. I will refer to these fake twitter accounts from this point on as tweggs here.

It is estimated that there are 45 million fake accounts out of 517 million accounts (02.08.12 – DenverPost). So when after you make your purchase there is a very high probability that you are spreading your ‘social’ budget to talk to yourself.

There is a booming market of selling twitter followers and retweets on platforms such as ebay and fiverr. There is a great piece by BarracudaLabs that shows every detail to know about on the underground twitter economy.

Twitter offers a first-in-a-world-history type of chance to engage users, gather customer feedback and most importantly define -in finer detail- the characteristics of the brand you aim to declare.

FastCoDesign started a very intriguing series of articles on what today’s social networking solution providers were once set-out to be & what they are now.

Before Twitter became a micro-blogging sensation it was a podcasting business. YouTube’s founders were convinced they’d hit the jackpot with a video-dating site. PayPal’s original mission was to beam IOUs from Palm Pilot to Palm Pilot. Flickr grew out of a massive multiplayer online game as a way for players to drop photos into text messages. Instagram’s founders created a check-in technology called Blurbn before settling on photos.
This pattern of change is not coincidental, or under-considered. All these companies are dealing directly with society, on a daily 1-to-1 basis. These companies that are pivoting in response to the demand are actually answering the need in the market for the organization that can change, which is limber and obviously gets it.

As straightforward as the fact that these companies are unmissable parts of how we connect, they sustain this position by being in tune with their audience, and understanding what their users’ needs are (even what it will be). They seek to be useful.

This leads us to observe that change at human centered organizations is permanent, due to unstable/ ever-evolving nature of people’s needs & desires.

Twitter’s Room for Improvement [UPDATED]

Approximately 6 months ago, before the Tumblr-ization of the user-base of Twitter (aka increasing teenage users in twitter), the things that are trending in my homepage were almost matching the global news headlines. This allowed me to understand why a topic is trending. With the increasing amount of Twitter usage by different demographics the current UI is incapable of offering options to niche user types to enhance their experience.

The solution I would suggest without forcing users to too much learning. Is adding and ‘x’ button that replaces irrelevant trend with something else (a relevant trend to what that user talks about maybe?). I would improve this change with a trends page that aggregates Top X trends for whatever segments that can be used with demographics information that Twitter already has.

Imagining Away/ Contextually Targeted Advertising

I am not offering this solution only from UX perspective, having each user to administrate what they are/not interested will present a database of user interests to Twitter. Looking at the bigger picture, this is a the dream microtasking project, it will provide Twitter software a lead in analyzing what their users are interested in and equates to highly targeted contextual ad offer to their B2B clients.

I understand that Twitter gets 120000 different kicks out of suggested trends, but let’s face it that’s just another billboard to ignore.


Twitter listens, understands and ultimately knows! This shows how an agent of medium needs to be flexible when it comes to serve the users’ needs.
